For the past 20 years or more, I have consistently declined to speak publicly on matters pertaining to sexual orientation. My decision to be silent in the public arena has been based on three convictions: it is too easy to be misinterpreted and thus become caught in endless, if not wearisome, debate on this issue; frankly, it has not been a topic that I believe is all that central to one’s response to God’s call to enter unreservedly into a communal life of consecrated celibacy in service to the Gospel.
